Life brings us interesting opportunities! I have been a full time student for nearly a decade, and have had many opportunities that I will always cherish. Whether it was research projects, teaching university CS or, now, working as a full time (8 weeks) team leader for Lambda School.
I have been a part-time Lambda School student in the Full Stack Software Engineer program for about five months, and when the opportunity to apply for a team leader position came, I jumped. A interview process followed and then I was informed I would be starting on Monday … 5 days ago!
That Friday evening, the weekly Sprint has been completed. There are so many components to being a team leader, and though it has been a learning curve, I feel blessed. Why?
If you have ever tried to learn in a group, whether formally or informally, you can appreciate having 8 students to work with that are interesting, passionate and wanting to change their stars. There is a lot of 1-on-1 time, daily in fact. Days are filled with lectures, group meetings, (digital) paperwork, assignment grading, help desk, skills development and more … long days, long fulfilling days.
There is a great sense of connection that occurs when you get to assist another person in finding their dreams. I researched where I wanted to attend boot camp for Full Stack, and I have really enjoyed my Full Stack courses. I enjoy the learning environment that the school has worked hard to build. They have worked hard to provide a great curriculum, amazing staff and a lot of opportunities to help your fellow students.
In 35 hours I have improved my overall work flow, my Github flow, Gmail organization, code review skills, communication skills, teamwork skills, methods on constructive responses, and so many other areas I don’t want to bore you with. The final thoughts I have are this, being a team leader for one week has helped me in every area of my personal and professional life! That is a big statement, but it is true. Being a team leader is absolutely worth the extra stress it brings to my life!
